As a business professional, I can tell you from personal experience that being part of a networking group (being part of something larger than yourself) can bring great success to your business. The right networking group can help you find new contacts, promote and raise awareness of your business. While playing with her fair skinned doll, a beautiful brown-skinned little girl looked up to her mother, and said that she wished that both she and her mother looked more like her doll, because her doll was beautiful. That is heartbreaking for any mother to hear because what it implies is that at a very young age, children have fallen victim to what society has deemed as beautiful.

With Black unemployment rates at an all time high, there is a powerful movement sweeping across the Black community to try and recapture the 1.3 trillion dollar estimated spending power that the Nielson report has projected African Americans will have by 2017. Now just sit back and think about that for a minute because it’s mind boggling. 1.3 trillion dollars. There are 1 million “millions” in a trillion. Hmmm… Put another way, we could give 1.3 million African American businesses 1 million dollars in start-up capital ever year with our GDP. If African Americans were a country, we would be ranked 16th in the world. We have a huge economic power, and we need to use it for our benefit.

African Americans are known to have participated in labor actions before the Civil War. Black workers found that the National Labor Union (the first national federation of unions) was reluctant to organize them, so they formed their own unions and carried on their own strikes to protest unfair treatment, like the strike of the levee workers in Mobile, Alabama in 1867 and the strike by black caulkers at the Washington Navy Yard in 1835
