We are a family-owned business, which was established in 1959 by the late Frank and Mattie Jones. The restaurant is now under the management of Mr. & Mrs. Craig Joseph Sr., the grandson of the Jones. Combined with Southern Hospitality and excellent customer service, we pride ourselves in being an excellent family diner. In addition, we offer a catering service to the Greater Houston Metropolitan area to accommodate your "Special Occasions"!

How it all began...

One of the oldest African-American restaurants in Houston, Texas, This Is It, dishes out delicious soul food from the steam table from a diverse mix of customers, working-class and professionals to politicians, entertainers, tourists, conference attendees, as well as its regular customers and neighborhood residents. The Jones’ turned the business over to Craig Joseph in 1994, after which, he purchased property for This Is It at 207 Gray. In 2008, a new restaurant was built at 207 Gray, Suite B. When This Is It started out in 1959, it was open for three days a week for lunch. Now it is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and with breakfast served Monday through Saturday.

    1. Ox Tails ($15.50) 

      Succulent cuts of beef tails braised and simmered with secret seasonings and vegetables cooked to perfection in delicious brown gravy.

    2. Meat Loaf ($11.00) 

      A perfect blend of ground beef, onions, peppers, garlic bread crumbs and seasoning, which is then covered in a rich tomato based sauce.

    3. Beef Short Ribs ($11.95) 

      Short cuts of beef rib marinated overnight, braised, and then cooked with onion & garlic until tender and delicious.

    4. Pepper Steak ($12.00) 

      Ground beef patties seasoned with creole spices simmered with onion and green peppers.

    5. Meat Balls ($10.50) 

      Homemade ground beef meatballs seasoned to perfection, baked to lock in the natural juices, and covered in gravy.

    1. Chitterlings ($12.25) 

      Pork intestines marinated in special blend of seasonings, then simmered with peppers until they are tender like a knife cutting through butter.

    2. Ham Hocks ($11.00) 

      Pork shanks which are boiled with our pork seasoning blend, celery, onion, and garlic, which is served in its natural gravy.

    3. Pork Neck Bones ($11.00) 

      Neck bones simmered with red and green peppers, onions and seasoning until the meat begins to fall from the bone, served in its natural gravy.

    4. Smothered. Pork Chops ($12.25) 

      Pork chops braised quickly then simmered with green and red peppers, onions, and special seasonings until fork tender.

    5. Smothered Pork Ribs ($11.00) 

      Top section of pork rib slab sliced and cooked in a rich brown gravy or BBQ sauce.

    1. Smothered Chicken ($11.00) 

      Chicken seasoned to perfection, quick braised, and then simmered with onions served with gravy made from chicken drippings.

      Ms. Gladys’s special fried chicken is marinated overnight in her own special blend of seasonings, dredged through a special flour mixture, and deep fried to a golden brown.

      Chicken simmered with vegetables and seasonings, and then infused with homemade dumplings, which forms a creamy golden gravy.

    5. Cornished Hen ($11.50) 

      Cornish hen stuffed with vegetables and infused with special seasonings, basted with a butter sauce, and baked to perfection.

      Catfish filets sprinkled with our secret blend of seasonings then dredged through our special cornmeal mix, and deep fried until golden and crispy.

      Our Louisiana style gumbo is cooked in a rich brown homemade roux and is filled with shrimp, crab, chicken, sausage, okra, celery, onions, peppers, and served over a bed of steaming white rice.

Our History

Houston This Is It Soul Food Restaurant has long served up foods originated from traditional slave and Southern cuisine, including ham hocks, chitterlings, black-eyed peas, smothered pork chops and oxtails. Frank and Mattie Jones, the late grandparents of the current owner, Craig Joseph, opened This Is It in 1959 in a frame house at 1003 Andrews, located in Freedmen’s Town, a predominately African American neighborhood in Fourth Ward. Frank Jones had been inspired by his mother, who in the ‘20s and early ‘30s ran a boarding house in the Fourth Ward at the corner of Ruthven and Crosby. She served soul food to her boarders, who included jazz greats Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway. In 1982, Frank and Mattie Jones moved the restaurant to a larger location at 239 West Gray with only enough room for 68 diners and parking for 12 cars. The movie “Jason’s Lyric” was filmed at the 239 West Gray Street location in 1993.

During the hot summer month of July 2010, Craig and Georgette Joseph and the This Is It family moved to its current location at 2712 Blodgett where the dream of Frank and Mattie Jones is kept alive. The Joseph family is looking further into the future and striving to create an even bigger and stronger business in the Third Ward community.
